首先，我称这部小说是一部“学习鉴赏艺术手册”。
出生在70年代的我们，对艺术的了解知之甚少。每次当我站在美术馆展览的艺术品前，“彷徨”二字油然而生。虽然站的很近，但又是那么的遥远！我仅仅感觉到好看还是不好看，但对它真正的美和创造者想要表达的内容，却不知道应该作何描述和欣赏。我曾向很多人提出过诸如此类的问题，但是一直没有寻找到答案。直到在毛姆的这本小说中，看到了答案：美是一种美妙、奇异的东西，艺术家只有通过灵魂的痛苦折磨才能从宇宙的`混沌中塑造出来。在美被创造出以后，它也不是为了叫每个人都能认出来的。要想认识它，一个人必须重复艺术家经历过的一番冒险。他唱给你的是一个美的旋律，要是想在自己心里重新唱一遍就必须有知识、有敏锐的感觉和想象力。多么一针见血的语言！想要欣赏到艺术的美，我需要学习和积累的还有很多很多。

爱情对于物质极其丰富而精神空虚的现在来讲，受到的考验更为严峻。婚姻无法为爱情保驾护航，有时候反而带来的是加速爱情的消亡。妇人往往把家庭布置的温馨、孩子教育的得体、照顾好家庭成员的饮食起居作为的首要任务，男人把事业、地位、金钱作为身份的象征。大家却都忽略了爱人之间的精神沟通。毛姆在小说中指导我们“在冲动的热情前面，这种感情是毫无防卫能力的。”

在这本小说中，能让我钦佩的不是查理斯斯特里克兰德。虽然每个人选择生活的`方式是自由的，我无需去评论，只能说查理斯斯特里克兰德是一位让我敬佩其坚忍不拔、追求理想的人，但是没有办法尊重的人。而使我真正钦佩的是布吕诺船长。“我在自己的身上也深深感到激励着他的那种渴望。但是他的手段是绘画，我的却是生活。” 布吕诺船长和妻子共同用双手创造出自己的人生理想。
